Military portrait and medals for sale

27th December 2014

Our December antique sale will include this amazing military collection relating to Brigadier-General Cecil Aspinall-Oglander of the Royal Munster Fusiliers.

The portrait was painted by Sir Gerald Kelly in 1922, which is accompanied by an original letter from the artist, who writes in 1961 "You are right, I did paint your father in 1922.  The commission was part of some war charity and I wasn't awfully interested but I did like your father who had some splendid decorations including a Siamese Star which was fun".

The impressive frame of orders and medals include the distinguished service order (DSO), the companion order of the Bath (KCB), the companion order of St Michael and St George (GCMG), the Queen's South Africa medal, the Ashanti medal, the India general service medal, the French Legion d'Honneur medal, and 3 first war service medals.

Aspinall-Oglander served in the Royal Munster Fusiliers and was mentioned in dispatches many times.  He was involved in the action at Gallipoli and wrote the book "The History of the Great War based on official documents:  Military Operations: Gallipoli", and several other books.

The collection has come to us directly from the descendants of the Brigadier-General.  They will be included in our 10 December antique sale, estimated at £5,000 to 7,000.
